Global Learning Session is a programme hosted by Akademi Pengajian Bahasa UiTM Shah Alam, in collaboration with CG Global Learning, CIDL Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic & International) in hope of helping students to expand their worldview across the geographical borders. This programme is also one of the initiatives for the students to develop new methods in delivery as highlighted in Education 5.0 @ UiTM, complying with the new norms in the COVID-19 era.
Last Thursday, English for Intercultural Communication Part 1 students were given the opportunity to join this programme. The lecturer in-charge of this talk was Dr Syamimi Turiman, a senior lecturer in LG243 APB. The guest speaker was Ms. Juliane Reinhardt-Max, a lecturer, an overseas student and a mobility coordinator in Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences, Frankfurt Am-Main, Germany.
Since the audience for this programme were Part 1 students who are taking EIC403 Intercultural Communication, Ms. Juliane explained about the German culture based on Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions. We were involved in this session and it was such an eye-opener and very refreshing to be able to interact with a speaker from another culture. We bet that this must be a new experience for all Part 1 LG243 students too.
On the same day, there was another Global Learning Session conducted by Pn. Suzana Hamzah for Part 4 LG243 students. They invited a guest speaker from United Kingdom named Professor Lynne Barbara Jack who is a Professor of Building Services Engineering and also the Immediate Past President CIBSE at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, United Kingdom. This session was held for students who are taking the EIC551 Workplace Communication course. Most of the students mentioned how the input of the programme was interesting and they wish for more sessions like this to be held in the future.
Besides these particular sessions, there were also other Global Learning Sessions hosted by the APB lecturers for Part 2 LG243 students. Both of the sessions were conducted by Ms. Nadiah Dato’ Hj Thanthawi Jauhari who is also an APB lecturer.
The first session was held on November 9th with the guest speaker, Dr. Gladys N. Torres Diaz who is an attorney in the Department of Health from San Juan, Puerto Rico. Then, the latest session was held on November 27th with the guest speaker from Daegu, South Korea named Mr. Song Doojin, who is a director of International Programs at Daegu Catholic University.
The students were very happy. They enjoyed the discussions and interactions they had with the speakers because they had inspired them to learn more about the English language from different perspectives of the world.
We are glad to be part of this session and we thank the lectures and the organizers for the initiative to help the students going global despite the current situation. We hope that this kind of programme can continue to be conducted in the future for the purpose of learning as we have collectively enjoyed the contents of the programme. Looking forward to the future plans of Global Learning Sessions!
